We are delighted to join forces with GEN1200 project (Ultra-Efficient Highly-Integrated 1200V Powertrains for Electric Vehicles Enabling Next-Generation Charging Speeds and Compatibility Across Charger Generations).
Similarly to ODYSSEV project, GEN1200 is paving the way set to accelerate innovation in high-voltage electric vehicle powertrains. Both projects are members of 2Zero partnership!
GEN1200 is a European research and innovation initiative funded under the Horizon Europe framework. The project runs from December 1, 2024, to November 30, 2027, and aims to develop and prototype a next-generation 1200V electric vehicle (EV) powertrain. While current mass-market EVs operate at 400V and are transitioning toward 800V systems, GEN1200 goes a step further by targeting a post-800V architecture based on 1200V, on a similar pathway to ODYSSEV !
GEN1200 project focuses on holistic system optimization, from component design to full vehicle integration, leveraging wide-bandgap semiconductors and multi-functional hardware architectures. A key innovation is the development of modular, scalable, and cost-effective 1700V silicon carbide (SiC)-based power electronics. Instead of assigning dedicated hardware for individual functions, GEN1200 integrates multiple functions into the same hardware platform. For example, the traction inverter is designed to also operate as an interleaved boost converter.
A major challenge addressed by the project is compatibility with existing charging infrastructure. To ensure real-world usability, the 1200V powertrain is designed to remain fully compatible with current 400V and 800V DC fast chargers. In addition, it integrates a 22 kW onboard AC charging function within the same system, increasing flexibility for users. Another core innovation is the development of a highly integrated electric axle (e-axle), which combines advanced power electronics, a high-efficiency electric motor, mechanical transmission, and auxiliary systems into a compact and optimized unit with improved thermal, electrical, and mechanical performance.
GEN1200 relies heavily on digital twins of components and full systems, combined with advanced control strategies such as adaptive gate drivers for SiC devices. These tools are used to minimize power losses under partial load conditions and to improve lifetime prediction accuracy. Validation is performed through a combination of classical component characterization, X-in-the-loop (XiL) simulations, and experimental testing, ensuring a strong link between laboratory development and industrial applicability. The technologies will be demonstrated on a representative C-segment passenger car platform, with the intention that the results can be scaled to other vehicle classes, including larger vehicles and trucks.
ODYSSEV and GEN1200 are closely tied in their effort towards high-voltage electric powertrains! Their synergy started with a common online meeting, where both projects confirmed their willingness to engage in joint actions through joint sessions in conferences, as well as supporting each other’s visibility and dissemination activities!
We look forward to working closely with GEN1200 and following its progress and contribution to shaping the next generation of electric vehicles.
